Just 24 kilometres (15 miles) outside Swellendam lies an historic farm, providing elegant accommodation for up to 12 guests. Jan Harmsgat has a long and wonderful history dating back to the 1700s when it was owned by a famous hunter. Today it's the ideal getaway destination, alleviating poverty in the surrounding community.

This Western Cape guest house is only a 2 hour drive from Cape Town, on a working farm in the scenic Klein Karoo Winelands region of South Africa. At Jan Harmsgat you will find a dairy operation with some of the best cheeses, and fruit and nut orchards. The old slave quarters have been restored as well, into luxury Western Cape guest house accommodation.

Part of the transformation process has resulted in an extensive, award-winning training programme to equip staff, drawn from the local community with the skills and knowledge to run a first-class Western Cape guest house.

Cheeses include classic Leiden, mature Cheddars and Boeren Kaas, complemented by a wonderful array of preserves. But what really sets Jan Harmsgat apart from other Western Cape guests houses are the gourmet meals that emerge from the double doors leading to the kitchen.
