Swellendam, Western Cape, South Africa




Beautiful, white-washed, gabled buildings grace the streets of this lovely old town and the curious visitor will interested in the museums and many national monuments. Close by is the Marloth Nature Reserve, the Swellendam Hiking Trail, the Breede River with its overnight canoe trips and the Bontebok National Park and De Hoop Nature Reserve.

Swellendam is an excellent base from which to do a day trip to Cape Agulhas. Accommodation in Swellendam ranges from a casual backpackers, and some inexpensive B&B's to fine lodges. There are some great coffee shops and a few good restaurants. Swellendam is just over 200km from Cape Town on the N2.

Rainfall is spread over the year (55% winter and 45% summer). There is little wind and temperatures are moderate. There is no shortage of water and gardens are lush and luxuriant. The cost of living is reasonable and the town is clean and efficiently well run. The people are friendly and there is no political strife with a virtual absence of serious crime.
