Oudtshoorn is situated in the Little Karoo also known as the Klein Karoo, South Africa. Boasting spectacular landscapes and mountains and above, all absolute peace and tranquillity away from city lights and noise.
The Klein Karoo is at the top end of the Garden Route and features vast expanses of what appears to be an arid land with mostly hot still days and chilly nights. However, an incredible diversity of life, in particular succulent plants, characterises this magnificent biome not found anywhere else in the world.
The landscape is broken by towering cliffs, splashes of colour and floral displays at certain times of the year and clear mountain streams. Wine making has flourished in the Klein Karoo as has Ostrich farming. Hiking and walks are popular activities in this region and there is abundant birdlife to be seen.
The Cango Caves, just west of Oudtshoorn, extend underground for over 2km (just over mile). This amazing National Monument is the result of about 20 million years of rainwater erosion to form vast halls and passageways with drip stone formations; this is a must see attraction for any visitor.
Oudtshoorn is 55km (34 miles) inland from the Garden Route city of George and the N2 highway on the east coast of South Africa. The route from Cape Town involves leaving the city on the N1 highway and then branching off at Worcester onto the R62 or Route 62 which is a quiet country road travelling through interesting little towns.
Thylitshia Villa is located 4km (2.5 miles) from the Highgate Ostrich Show Farm which is just off the R328 road to Mossel Bay from Oudtshoorn.
